'Obvious Star Quality' - Jazzwise

Jim Gold is a London-based saxophonist and bandleader. He has performed at Ronnie Scott’s with his own quartet, Billy Cobham with The Guy Barker Big Band, The Skelton/Skinner Allstars Big Band, The Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra, The Callum Au Big Band, and The National Youth Jazz Orchestra, in which he played lead alto. He has also appeared in Jasper Høiby's 'Fellow Creatures', Brandon Allen’s sextet, Gareth Lockrane’s Big Band, and Pete Long’s ‘Jazz at the Philharmonic’.

In 2012, he joined NYJO, and held the lead alto chair with the band from 2015-2017, appearing at the BBC Proms, and on BBC’s The One Show and The Today Programme on Radio 4. He was described as being amongst 'the pick of the consistently excellent bunch' in Jack Massarik’s review of NYJO’s album ‘The Change’ in Jazzwise, and praised for his 'fine solos' in the Evening Standard.

Throughout 2013 Jim could be heard regularly opening the jam session at Charlie Wright’s with Rob Luft, appearing alongside Steve Fishwick, Sammy Mayne, and Martin Speake. Whilst studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at University College, Oxford, he directed the Oxford University Big Band, organising concerts featuring Atlantic Records artist Kwabs and Mornington Lockett. His writing has been featured on BBC Radio 3's Jazz Now.
